Gavin Olson and Isaac Hendrickx’s friendship blossomed from an unexpected pairing at the inaugural ABLE Games in 2021. Initially hesitant, Gavin agreed to participate at his mother’s encouragement. Isaac, excited about meeting his partner, arrived early for the event.
Upon meeting, Gavin and Isaac instantly connected, their friendship developing naturally and quickly. Throughout the competition, they supported each other, demonstrating a genuine concern for one another’s well-being. This was evident when Gavin was late returning from lunch, and Isaac refused to compete without him, displaying their strong bond.
During breaks, the pair chose to spend time together rather than resting, engaging in simple activities like bottle flips and throwing a football. Their friendship extended beyond the competition, with them exchanging contact information to stay in touch despite the distance between them.
When the next ABLE Games approached, both Gavin and Isaac were only willing to compete if paired together again, highlighting the strength of their connection. Their friendship continued to grow outside the event, with Isaac attending Gavin’s last football game and senior night, where he was warmly welcomed by Gavin’s family and teammates.
In an interview during the most recent ABLE Games, Gavin expressed his initial nervousness about being paired with a stranger but emphasized how grateful he was for the experience that led to a great friendship. “I’m glad I did it, I’m glad this happened, it is a blessing, and I made a best friend out of it, so it’s definitely worth it,” expressed Gavin. Isaac, when asked about his excitement for the games, simply stated, “I get to go to every game with Gavin Olson.”
Their friendship’s impact extended further in ABLE Games 2024, where Gavin invited more of his teammates to join the competition. This led to the formation of a larger, tight-knit group, spreading the mission of ABLE Games, and highlighting the power of inclusive friendships.
Gavin and Isaac’s story exemplifies the ABLE Games’ mission of inclusivity and meeting everyone where they are. Their friendship, characterized by its genuineness, lack of judgment, and mutual joy, serves as a testament to the positive impact of such inclusive events. Their story not only highlights their dedication to the games but also celebrates the beautiful friendship they have created and nurtured. It stands as an inspiring example of how events like ABLE Games can foster meaningful connections and break down barriers between individuals of diverse abilities.
